School funday plan to meet funds shortfall after festival cancelled
A Shropshire primary school which faced losing a chunk of vital cash after a major festival in its town was cancelled is launching its own fundraiser.
The popular Morville Festival, usually attended by hundreds, was cancelled this year to give its hard-worked organisers a rest.
But the closure was particularly bad news for Morville Primary School, which benefited from a large portion of the takings to buy essential equipment for pupils.
To try and make up for the lost money, the school is now aiming to set up its own fundraiser. the Morville Primary School Community Fun Day.
It is planned to run on Saturday, June 22 from 2pm to 6pm, at the school. Organisers are hoping the community will get behind the event.
Head of school Christian Sharp said: "We're trying our best to get something together. We are hoping people in the local community and parishes will come and hold stalls. We're going to invite local bands and dance groups to perform.
He added: "We always had an agreement that the parents and staff would help out and volunteer (at the Morville Festival). We ran the stalls at the fete. We would get a percentage of the takings.
"The money would be used not just for the day-to-day running of the school. We've used the money for an interactive screen, we bought all the younger ones guided reading books. We've bought Kindle's for all pupils to use. Without that money we wouldn't be able to provide these things for the children. We are a small school with a small budget."
It is planned that cash from the event will be used to renovate the school's forest space.
More details about the fundraiser will be confirmed closer to the time. It is expected Morville Festival will return next year, with fresh committee members to take some of the heat of the team that have done the brunt of the work since it started in 2000.
