Martin Kemp Back to the 80s DJ Set, The Buttermarket, Shrewsbury - review with pictures
"You can't beat a bit of the 80s," proclaimed Martin Kemp to his Shropshire audience.
And the Spandau Ballet star was not wrong.
The decade may have produced endless cheesy tunes (not to mention dodgy fashion), but it also served up some unforgettable pop hits that make you want to dance like no one is watching.
And last night the crowd at The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury were taken on a trip back to their school days as music from the 80s filled the club - thanks to one of the pop stars of the era.
In a departure from his usual bass playing in Spandau Ballet, Martin Kemp turned DJ for the night as he took to the decks spinning some of the greatest hits from the 80s in an intimate gig at the nightspot.
And the 57-year-old silver fox - who like fine wine, appears to get better with age - whipped up a frenzy with his predominately female audience of 40 and 50-somethings.
From the opening of Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' through to Frankie Goes to Hollywood's classic Relax, Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Get Into the Groove by Madonna - the pop and TV star delivered the perfect back catalogue of chart toppers from the 80s.
It was like listening to your favourite 80s mixtape (yes, take note kids of today, we had cassettes back then).
Chaka Khan's I Feel For You and I'm Every Woman went down a treat as did Heaven 17s Temptation and You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive.
And of course, it wouldn't be the 80s without a Spandau Ballet tune or two.
Martin - who will be back in the Midlands next June when he brings his Back to the 80s DJ Set to Bilston's Robin 2 - gave the crowd Chant No 1 as well as Spandau's classic Gold.
We sang and danced the night away. What a fun trip down memory lane. They certainly don't make them like they used to in the 80s!
