Newport residents are preparing for the Britain in Bloom judges

Judges from the Britain in Bloom competition will be visiting the town this summer, and those working to get the town ready said preparations are going well.

And, as with previous years, Newport in Bloom is inviting anybody who wants to offer a helping hand to get involved.

Karen Claxton, of the group, said: "Preparations for Britain in Bloom are going well. We have been delighted by the response we've had from the community as a whole. Everybody is pulling together really well."

She said businesses around the town had really made an effort to sponsor the hanging baskets down the High Street this year.

"We've sold more hanging baskets this year. We are particularly pleased that people have not only bought a basket for their own premises, but have sponsored a hanging basket by the empty premises as well so there won't be too many gaps."

On June 1, Newport in Bloom will host its annual plant and book sale at The Guildhall. The hanging baskets will be put up the following day, and organisers have called for volunteers to get involved.

From going up ladders to hang baskets to sweeping up afterwards, there is a lot for people to do.
