Though people initially thought they were speed cameras, police have confirmed they are actually to monitor traffic in the area.

Superintendent Nav Malik, police commander in Telford, said: "The temporary cameras installed in and around Wellington and Leegomery are being used to monitor traffic and record the movement of vehicles in those areas.

"The cameras – which will not be used to record the speed of vehicles – have previously been used in Worcester and are likely to be used elsewhere in Telford, and also across West Mercia, in the future.

"Cameras like these serve a number of purposes for the police but historically they have proved a valuable tool in the prevention and detection of serious acquisitive crimes such as dwelling burglaries and violent disorder or assaults."

There are six cameras in total. Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport & Community Protection, said: "The authority fully supports initiatives that aim to make our roads safer and the traffic cameras installed by the police are another positive step that is been taken to help ensure that road safety continues to improve."
