The store off Frogmore Road will close in August, and clearance sales have begun. The news was announced earlier this week.

Market Drayton Town Councillor Roy Aldcroft said: "I do feel sorry for the staff there. They do a good job, they know their products and they will be sorely missed as well.

"Some of the staff have been there that long they have almost become friends to the customers they serve. We can only hope they can find similar jobs in the retail industry.

"It is also quite sad for the people in the town because really it is the last call as far as anything to do with DIY.

"The nearest store to get that kind of stuff now will be Shrewsbury or Stoke."

Fellow town councillor Mike Smith said: "It was rumoured since around Christmas time. You get the impression they have been struggling for some considerable time really.

"I know it is a big shop but I have never really seen it busy.

"It's a pity really. I know they're expensive but it was quite nice if you wanted something in an emergency."
