Aaron Hernandez, 34, suffered serious head injuries and was in a coma after being attacked near the Dun Cow pub in Trench, Telford, on April 2.

Kevin Buxton, 27, of Malcolm Davies Drive, Telford, admitted a charge of causing grievously bodily harm without intent at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

He was made subject to a two-year suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay £7,500 in compensation.

Mr Hernandez’s mother, Lyn Cooksey, has spoken about about the devastating effect the incident has had on her son.

He was taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital after the attack and was in critical care on life support for almost three weeks.

Months later, Mr Hernandez is still suffering the effects of the assault, which resulted in him falling to the ground twice.

The second time he struck his head, causing severe head injuries, which included brain contusions, bilateral subdural haematomas, and two separate skull fractures.

Ms Cooksey said: “These have been-life changing injuries, he can’t go out on his own.

“He needs lots of support with day-to-day life, and decision making, not to mention the depression and anxiety he has suffered.”

Mr Hernandez has received intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy to improve his function and balance issues.

Ms Cooksey described how the aftermath of the attack had been devastating.

“The goal is for him to return to his own home and be independent, but it will be a long journey,” she said.

“Devastation is the only way to describe the effect this has had on his family.”

In addition to the suspended sentence, Buxton was ordered to do 300-hours unpaid work, and abide by a six-month curfew between 8pm and 6am. He was also electronically tagged as a result of the case.
