Motorist says there are no bad roads, just bad drivers

A woman with almost half a century of driving behind her says it is not roads that are dangerous but drivers.

Heather Gruar from Llanymynech has spoken out about bad drivers in the wake of the Shropshire Star's Dual It campaign, to turn the A5 between Montford Bridge and the Welsh border into a dual carriageway.

Mrs Gruar, 64, said the cost of the work would be astronomical.

"It is not roads that are bad, it is drivers," she said.

"It drivers would drive properly and at the proper speed there would be no problems. I have been driving since I was 18 and did an advanced driver course and I have never had an accident."

She said she was appalled at some of the driving on the A5.

"It is like a speed track and people obviously don't know their Highway Code. I was driving to Shrewsbury the other day at about 60 miles an hour and, no joke, drivers were overtaking at about 80 miles an hour."

"People say that the Queens Head junction on the A5 is dangerous. But it is not the road it is the way the drivers deal with the junction."

The Shropshire Star is calling on the roads minister, John Hayes, to include the road from Montford Bridge to the Welsh border in the government's Road Investment Strategy.

We want to see improvements to the road and our Dual It campaign is calling for it to be dualled through Shropshire from north of Montford Bridge.

There are now almost 3,750 signatures on our on line petition and we have had 250 people sign our print petition in the Shropshire Star.

One of those who has signed the appeal and agrees that the driving is dangerous is Susan Smith who writes: "I dread having to use this part of the A5. The dangerous driving and bullying tactics of some people are appalling. "

Let us have your views on whether the A5 should be a dual carriageway.
