Mountain of a test for Shropshire students
A group of Shropshire students are taking on a triple challenge involving Snowdon to raise money for charity.
The outdoor activity students at Shrewsbury Colleges Group have selected the challenge as their fundraising activity this year.
Each year, students studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Outdoor Activities take on a challenge to raise money for a charity of their choosing.
Last year they tackled the Yorkshire three peaks and on Tuesday they set off for Wales for the Snowdon triple challenge.
The three parts of the challenge are made up of various sports.
The students will start with a 2.6 mile kayak, then run half a marathon, before finishing with a 56 mile bike ride.
The group of students have decided to donate their funds to the NeuroMuscular Centre in Cheshire – a place that aims to improve the quality of life for adults with neuromuscular conditions.
Student Alyssa D’Souza, 18, from Gobowen said: “I put forward the chosen charity as my cousin has muscular dystrophy and the centre is such a special place for our family – it’s so close to my heart. I am nervous about the challenge, but also really looking forward to it. I love running, so I think the half-marathon will be my strong point.”
Student Sam Skinner, 18, from Newport said: “It is great that we get to fundraise for a charity that relates to someone on our course and we can raise awareness for such an amazing place.
"We have all been doing so much training to get ready. We go out for activity days with college anyway, but we have also been spending our spare time running and in gyms. Everyone’s been working really hard.”
