Nurses at Shropshire trust aim to inspire next generation

By Lisa O'Brien | Health | Published:

Staff at the trust which runs Shropshire's two main hospitals are being encouraged to sign up as ambassadors to a national initiative that raises the profile and status of nurses worldwide.

The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust (Sath) is encouraging its staff to sign up as ambassadors to Nursing Now.

The initiative inspires the next generation of nurses by shining a light on the breadth of careers available within the industry.

Clare Walsgrove, matron for unscheduled care at Sath, has signed up as a Nursing Now ambassador and is driving the campaign at the trust, which runs Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

She said: “I have been a matron at Sath for nine years, and with a background across a number of clinical areas I’m passionate about inspiring the next generation of nurses.

“In my role as a Nursing Now ambassador I will be giving talks at local schools to try and engage young people and open their eyes to the wide-ranging and diverse opportunities available to them in our profession.

"From research and executive leadership to the essential day-to-day caring responsibilities, the career paths offered in nursing and midwifery have never been better.”

Nursing Now aims to enable nurses to work to their full potential and have an even greater impact on health.

Worldwide, this means investing in nurses so they can take on leadership positions in clinics and in primary and community care.

They should also be empowered to play a greater role in prevention, promotion and health literacy and increase the provision of midwifery, child and adolescent services.

Ambassadors create a bridge between activities to promote nursing locally and the nationwide campaign.

A wide range of people can be ambassadors, from first year students to all registrants on the Nursing and Midwifery Council; practitioners from all stages in their career; those in full and part time employment and people working across health and care sectors, including voluntary organisations.

Ambassadors will receive coaching and mentoring support.
