Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and right, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, both revealed in videos today that they have tested positive for Covid-19

A man died yesterday at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after testing positive for coronavirus. The patient was in his 90s and had underlying health conditions.

Dr Arne Rose, medical director at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), said: “Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire and had tested positive for COVID-19, has died.

“His family has been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”

The news comes as Boris Johnson is self-isolating in Downing Street after he tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday after experiencing mild symptoms.

Health secretary Matt Hancock this afternoon confirmed he too has tested positive for the virus, but added his symptoms are mild and he will be working from home and self-isolating.

It comes after cases of the virus rose to 44 in the Shropshire Council area and to 17 in Telford & Wrekin. There are a 16 confirmed cases in Powys.

Three people have died in Shropshire, two have died in Telford & Wrekin, and death figures for Powys are still to be confirmed.

It comes as thousands of people across county united in applauding NHS workers and carers last night in a nationwide thank you to those on the frontline.
