Pictures From The Past – August 23Welcome to this week's collection of nostalgia photos from the pages of the Shropshire Star.By Toby NealPublished Aug 23, 2019 CommentsWith lost episodes of the television comedy classic Dad's Army being recreated for the screen, this is a view of the real Dad's Army in Shropshire. A note with the picture says: "8 Salop (Bridgnorth) Bn Shropshire Home Guard stand down parade. 3 Dec 1944. Major R. Nicholas. Commr 1.2.1941. Taking the salute, Lt Col R.W.R. Wilson, Comm." So this is the stand down parade of Bridgnorth Home Guard in December 1944 when, with the threat of invasion gone, there were similar stand down parades across Britain. They are passing in front of Roden's shop, and the picture was taken by the shopkeeper, Walter Roden, and was loaned by his grandson Jonathan Stubbs.
