Former Bridgnorth mayoress dies, aged 80

A former mayoress of Bridgnorth has died aged 80.

Valerie Parr held the position in the town for three years between 1972 and 1975 and died on Wednesday, April 10.

Born on May 13, 1938 in Penn, Wolverhampton to Norman and Florence Palliser, she began to work at Warner’s Photographic Studio in Chapel Ash before training as a makeup artist with Max Factor, working at the Beatties store for a number of years.

In 1958, she married Bill Parr and together they made Bridgnorth their home, both being heavily involved in and around the community. Mr Parr died in 2012 at the age of 84.

Church

Wife and mother of two children, Valerie leaves her son, Shropshire councillor for Bridgnorth East and Astley Abbotts William Parr and former landlady of the Bear Inn, in North Gate, Juanita – along with her grandchildren.

Her son, William said: “Valerie was inspired by nature, specifically her garden and wildlife.

“She was a member of Inner Wheel and was involved in both church and village life.

“She was always up to date with current affairs and the interests of the local community including its history.

“She will be remembered for her quick wit, elegance and compassionate spirit.”

A funeral service will be held at the Parish Church of St Calixtus, in Astley Abbotts at 2pm on Saturday.
