“Mindless idiots” who have driven over graves in Bridgnorth cemetery have been condemned for their “outrageous” behaviour.

Muddy tyre tracks have been left on several memorials at the cemetery, which is about a mile north-east of the town centre off the A442.

Furious and heartbroken residents took to social media to vent their fury, with more than 50 people commenting.

One woman said: “Careless drivers at the top of Bridgnorth Cemetery have driven over my in-laws grave and other gravestones two days in a row. People should have more respect.”

Another said: “I’m so so sorry this has happened to your beloveds – this person clearly has no soul and respect!”

Others branded the behaviour “outrageous” and “disgusting”, and labelled the culprits “morons”.

Mayor Ron Whittle was equally perplexed at the situation.

He said: “I was up there the other day.

“I just don’t know why people do it. It’s upsetting for the people that have got graves up there.

Shame

“It’s one of the prettiest cemeteries you will find for people to visit their loved ones.

"It’s just a shame you get a few mindless idiots who think it’s okay to do something like that.”

Vehicles are able to drive into the grounds of the cemetery, right up to the top, close to the graves, to a car park.

"It is open to vehicles from 9am to 4pm, with pedestrian access at additional times.

The cemetery has had problems with anti-social behaviour in the past, with people breaking in.

Mr Whittle added: “We’ve not had problems with vehicles before that I am aware of. We did have an issue with people breaking into the compound.

“You can drive up to the top because it is quite a long way and difficult to get up there for older folks. It is quite a climb up to the top and there is a car park there. The most recent graves are at the top.”

He hopes people will not be so inconsiderate in the future.

“What people get out of doing something like this, I do not know,” he said.
