The town hosted the annual St George’s Day Parade for the district Scout movement, welcoming Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the Telford, Bridgnorth and Ludlow and south Shropshire areas.

With St George’s Day falling on Easter Tuesday this year the decision was made to hold the parade and church service a week early, on Palm Sunday.

About 200 young members of the Scout movement and about 50 leaders gathered at Much Wenlock for the colourful parade to the parish church with the standards and flags of the troops taken to the church.

Once inside there was a service conducted by Reverend Matthew Stafford, the vicar of Much Wenlock. He said he was thrilled to be hosting the service.

Andy Barker, the 1st Much Wenlock Scout Group Leader, said the district St George’s Day Parade was held in a different town each year.

“We have been to the services all over the district and this year it was our turn to host it,” he said.

“St George is the patron saint of Scouts which is why we celebrate his Saint’s Day.

“Falling at the start of the Easter holidays we did have a lot of people away on holiday but we still had about 250 people take part.”

He added: “Reverend Stafford gave a great service, getting the young people involved and interested.”

He said the weather had been perfect for the parade.
