Powys County Council will receive a £126,400 grant to enhance the Lake Park area in Llandrindod Wells. The grant, funded by the European Union through the Welsh Government’s Rural Community Development Plan, will also be used to support business opportunities in the area.

“The woodland trail within the site of special scientific interest will be improved for safety and accessibility with footpaths, steps and railings and the pathway to the west which joins the national cycle road will also be improved.

Moorings, floating barriers, boat storage and a kiosk will be build for boating and the project also includes plans to make more of the nearby amphitheatre by replacing the existing wooden seating and providing a shelter to protect it from the elements.

The water beast sculpture in the lake will also be repaired.

Councillor Martin Weale, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning, said: “The lake and surrounding area are important tourist facilities for Llandrindod Wells and mid-Powys and this grant will provide a huge boost to their business prospects.

“This exciting project will enhance the lake park area, support business opportunities and stimulate future developments, including bringing boating back to the lake in a sympathetic way that does not interfere with the wildlife.

“The work will enhance an already important tourist area and will generate new business opportunities, particularly through the boating and amphitheatre operations.

Total investment in the project is £158,000 with £126, 400 coming from a Welsh Government grant and the remainder from the council’s regeneration service and match funding.
