A triathlon with a difference takes to the water next month.

People taking part in the Montgomery Canal Triathlon on May 18 take part in one two or three sections of the event which covers the entire 35 miles of the canal from Newtown to Lower Frankton, near Ellesmere.

Organisers are reminding those wanting to get involved that the closing date for those wishing to take part is May 4.

This will be the eighth Montgomery Canal Triathlon organised by the friends of the canal.

It has proved to be a very popular event with around 240 entrants taking part each year.

Those taking part cycle along the side of the canal, walk or run a section and paddle the third section by canoe or kayak. If they want they can do just one or two of the sections.

Freda Davies from the friends group said: "This will also be the first year that entrants have the chance to raise funds for the canals restoration, if they wish to. They can use the sponsorship form that is available with the entry form on the Friends events section on the Montgomery Canal website."

She said that clubs, groups, businesses as well as individuals are encouraged to take part.

"It's a fun, non competitive event with sections options if you are not able to complete the 35 mile route."

A slate medallion is awarded to all who complete the sections that they enter.
