Man killed in Shropshire crash was rushing to help sick father

And as emergency vehicles were sent to help Simon Peter George, it was the ambulance carrying his father to hospital that reached him first.

Mr George, 46 and from Prees, died in October after losing control of his blue Ford Focus on the A529 at Adderley, near Market Drayton, and hitting a tree.

A coroners court this week heard that he was on his way to pick up his mother to follow an ambulance taking his father to hospital.

At an inquest into his death, coroner John Ellery heard evidence from paramedics and a driver who was overtaken by Mr George shortly before the crash.

Peter Popovic was driving on the A529 near the Adderley roundabout on October 20 when he saw the Ford overtake him and disappear out of sight.

He said it was travelling at up to 80mph.

Shortly afterwards, at about 11.30am, Mr Popovic saw the car by a tree, with damage to its passenger side. He stopped and called out to the driver but there was no response.

Verdict

A doctor, Graham Cooper, also stopped to help the driver, of Twemlows Avenue, Higher Heath, Prees near Whitchurch.

Coroner's officer Michael Caesar-Homden said: "Mr George was in a rush to attend his mother's address and follow the ambulance carrying his father."

Ambulances were called to the scene of the crash, but the first to arrive happened to be carrying Mr George's father to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford after he had suffered a seizure.

Mr George was found with heavy injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the inquest this week Mr Ellery said: "Mr George was going home quickly as he could to take his mother to hospital and to follow the ambulance with his father in.

"That ambulance with his father in it came across his collision scene."

He recorded a verdict of death by road traffic collision.
