Family pays tribute as Oswestry A5 crash victim is named

A man who died when his car collided with a stationary lorry on the A5 near Oswestry has been named as 32-year-old Garat Hannan.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Mr Hannan's car collided with the lorry between the Gobowen and Gledrid roundabouts.

Formal identification is yet to take place, however West Mercia Police has said the victim of the crash is believed to be Mr Hannan, from Wrexham.

Police this afternoon confirmed that the lorry which Mr Hannan's car collided with had been stationary.

Mr Hannan's family has issued a statement through the police, paying tribute to him.

They said: "The whole family would like to thank the emergency services for the care and respect they showed to Garat at his last moment.

"Our hearts are broken our lives will never be the same again. A bright light has gone out. We'll never forget you Garat. We'll love and miss you forever xxx."

Police are continuing to appeal for information and are asking any witnesses to contact West Mercia Police on 101 quoting reference 09s 200319.

The road was closed for several hours following the crash, with traffic diverted through Gobowen.

On the diversion route, two pedestrians were struck by a van and were taken to hospital in Stoke with serious injuries.

On Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, two further crashes occurred on the A5 near Oswestry, but no injuries were reported.
