Walking football sessions were launched this week in Weston Rhyn near Oswestry and will be held every Tuesday on the Recreation Ground in Vicarage Lane at 11am.

Walking football can be enjoyed by everyone, men and women, and with varying ranges of fitness.

The weekly sessions are being run by The New Saints Community Foundation with funding for the first 16 from The Three Parishes Big Local lottery project.

It was the brainchild of Weston Rhyn Parish Councillor, Angela Bright.

"I read about it in another part of the area and thought it would be great to have sessions in Weston Rhyn," Councillor Bright said.

"We are having mixed teams and people of all ages, who may not be able to play ordinary football. They might have enjoyed the game in the past or may have never played before.

"At the first session we had seven people but we are hoping that they will encourage others to come along. Everyone had a fantastic time, it was great fun for everyone who took part," she said.

"We are very grateful to the Big Local which gave us a grant of £500 for the first 16 sessions. If we can then get 10 people to each session, paying just £3 each it will become self funding and we can continue into the future."
