The A5 was closed northbound between the Whittington and the Gobowen roundabouts following the accident at 10.22am.

Emergency services said the bike had hit a barrier along the busy trunk road, which also carries the A483.

The rider was airlifted by air ambulance to the Royal Stoke Hospital.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said:

“We were called at 10.22am to reports of a collision at the junction of the B5069 and the A5 involving a motorbike and barrier.

"We sent the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford, a land ambulance and paramedic officer to the scene. We treated one patient, a man, who was the motorcyclist for potentially serious injuries.

"He was taken to Royal Stoke Hospital by air ambulance for further treatment.”

Traffic was diverted though Whittington and Gobowen.
