The event, now in its 16th year, draws a huge audience with live drawings of giant cartoons in the Square as the centrepiece, alongside caricaturing by some of the UK’s top professionals.

Festival chairman Bill McCabe said: “Every year the event seems to get bigger and more diverse. This year’s animal theme has attracted a huge postbag of wonderful cartoons from around the world.

"Having such a display of original talent on show in Shrewsbury is an amazing asset for the town.”

The majority of events take place across April 26 and 27, including a talk by The Guardian's Steve Bell on the 'political animals' he has observed up close over the years, and a series of family cartoon workshops with Clive Goddard, Jonathan Cusick, Zoom Rockman and Graham Higgins.

Cartoonist The Surreal McCoy has produced a graphic memoir based on her Iraqi-Jewish heritage, exploring theme of displacement, refugees, identity and belonging.

Visitors will be able to have their picture drawn by one of the caricaturists in the Square on Saturday. Simon Airey the Animal Man will also be there from 11am with his exotic animald.

The event will also be raising money for Guide Dogs UK.
