Rescue bid launched after man spotted in waters of River Severn

A man was spotted in the River Severn at Shrewsbury prompting a rescue bid.

The man was spotted in the waters of the River Severn near Welsh Bridge

Emergency services were called to the Welsh Bridge in the early hours of today amid reports of a person in the water.

The alarm was raised at about 1am by members of the public.

As police, ambulance and fire services arrived they found the man had managed to get out of the water.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent three crews from Shrewsbury and Wellington, including the specialist water rescue unit.

A spokesman said: "Crews responded to reports of a man in the river.

"On arrival the male was out of the water and was being assessed by ambulance personnel."

The rescue boat did not have to be launched and the fire service stood down at 1.15am.
