More than 5,700 Christmas shoeboxes sent from Telford to Ukraine
More than 5,700 Christmas shoeboxes have been packed up in Telford and sent to children in Ukraine thanks to the people of the county.
Residents have donated the shoeboxes which have been processed by a team of 65 volunteers over the past three weeks.
The team, working at the Reviive depot in Telford, packed up a total of 5,716 shoeboxes, which are now being driven to Ukraine by lorry.
The shoe boxes contain toys, schools supplies, hair accessories, and all manner of treats for children who would otherwise not be receiving any presents for Christmas.
Generous
Elaine Udakis, Telford co-ordinator for Operation Christmas Child, said that they had been thrilled at the response to the appeal.
She said: "We have processed 3,626 shoe boxes in the centre from Telford, and another 2090 from Shropshire.
"People have been really generous.
"They are now on a lorry making its way to children in Ukraine.
"The general public have been so kind in donating all the shoe boxes. That is a lot of generous people from Shropshire who have taken the time and made the effort to fill a shoe box and send it to us. It is wonderful."
Ms Udakis also praised the efforts of the volunteers who have pack the boxes for the trip to Ukraine.
She said: "It has been hard work for three weeks but if you are making a difference to 5,716 children's lives then it is all worth it."
