'Danger to life' flood warning issued for Ironbridge

A 'danger to life' severe flooding warning has been issued for Ironbridge.

The Environment Agency said that flooding of property is expected along the Wharfage as a result of the water going over temporary defences.

The river is expected to peak at between 6.7m to 7m on Tuesday evening. If it reaches its top expected height, it will be nearly equal to the highest level on record. It reached 7.04m on November 2, 2000.

A rest centre facility has been set up at The Tontine Hotel for anybody who needs it.

In the meantime, people are advised to avoid flood waters and call 999 if in immediate danger.

Sessions for residents affected by flooding had been planned for tonight, but have been cancelled. Instead, people who need help should call the council.

The Wharfage was closed this morning, and The Wharfage and Dale End car parks were shut from 10am - motorists are advised to move their vehicles if parked there. Many businesses facing close to the river have remained shut.

Coalbrookdale Primary School is also shut today, and is expected to be closed tomorrow.

Meanwhile Telford & Wrekin Council said its staff today retrieved a car belonging to a honeymooning bride in the Gorge.

It tweeted: "Our crews are in Ironbridge Gorge helping anyone who needs it. They have repaired + fitted a resident’s flood defences + rescued a car belonging to a woman on honeymoon. If you need help, just ask our crews or call 01952 384000."

The council said: "Our crews have been out overnight distributing sandbags. Sandbags are also available to pick up from Ironbridge Park & Ride and staff will be on hand to help.

"The Ironbridge Park & Ride is open for anyone in the Gorge who wants to move their vehicle if it’s at risk of being flooded.

"We are urging residents to be prepared and let us know if they need any assistance. Rest centre facilities are being set up for anyone who needs it and we will let you know where later today."

Anybody with concerns about flooding can call the Telford & Wrekin Council contact centre on 01952 384000.
