Extra homes in Shrewsbury get go-ahead despite outcry

Plans for around 40 new homes for Shrewsbury have been given the go-ahead despite worries that the area’s schools and doctors’ surgeries are already full.

The Wrekin Housing Trust Homes, to be built off Lesley Owen Way in Sundorne, will include 26 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom homes as well as five wheelchair accessible bungalows.

Outline planning permission was granted for 29 homes on the land last year with Shropshire Council’s Central Planning Committee granting the reserved matters application on Wednesday in a meeting at the Shirehall.

Councillor Kevin Pardy told the meeting that the extra homes were an over development of the land and also encroached on a wildlife corridor.

He said there were badgers known to be in the area.

“I absolutely believe that we need more affordable and social houses. However the schools in the area are at capacity. There were 13 children at Sundorne Infant School nursery who were unable to access places at the school last September,” he said.

“The doctors’ surgeries are also full. We need to look at the infrastructure and how it can be helped.”

Heather Sutton, from the developer, said that a badger access corridor would be built as part of the scheme.

Planning officer Jane Raymond said: “It is considered that the layout, scale and appearance does not represent an over development of the site.”
