Lucy Allan, a leave supporter, said that Brexit supporting voters will want to vote for leave candidates in the forthcoming EU elections.

She added that the EU elections would see party politics eclipsed by the debate over Brexit.

Ms Allan had retweeted an article on Twitter, which praised five "excellent candidates" for the Brexit Party, which is fronted by former Ukip leader Nigel Farage.

Ms Allan said: "If European elections are held, leave supporting voters will want to vote for leave supporting candidates.

"Given these unprecedented times, tribal party politics will be eclipsed by the leave/remain divide in an EU election. We were supposed to have left the EU on March 29 and we are now planning for EU elections.

"We should not be participating in these elections.

"The Brexit Party has some strong candidates for the EU elections – as a leave supporting MP in a leave supporting constituency, that is to be welcomed."

It comes as it was revealed that two of the leading contenders to become the next prime minister will set out their visions in Shropshire this week.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab will address party members during two Conservative member dinners in the county.

Mr Raab, a Eurosceptic who resigned from the Government over its approach to Brexit, will be in Shrewsbury tomorrow.

Mr Hunt, who was the longest serving health secretary in history before being promoted to the Foreign Office last year, will be in the county on Friday.

Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski said the private events were an opportunity for members to question the politicians on the future.
