Plans unveiled for 500 Shrewsbury homes

More than 500 homes are set to be built in Shrewsbury, with the first stage of the project expected to create 200 jobs, it was revealed today.

The properties would be built west of Hanwood Road in Radbrook, stretching up to the bottom of Mytton Oak Road, close to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Barratt Homes has applied for planning permission to start on the first phase of the project, which would involve the creation of 118 properties on the Radbrook side of the development.

It is intended that 15 of the homes would be affordable housing.

The wider plan for 550 homes also involves the proposed creation of a major new countryside park.

It is the latest major housing development planned for the town, following on from Taylor Wimpey applying to build 292 homes in Sutton Grange, off Oteley Road earlier this year.

Developers said today work could begin early next year on Hanwood Road, subject to planning permission being granted by Shropshire Council.

Wynne Thomas, land director for Barratt West Midlands, said: "We have submitted a planning application for 118 homes on a site off Hanwood Road in Shrewsbury.

"The proposed development will comprise a mix of two, three, four and five bedroom properties.

"Subject to planning we hope to start construction early next year with the first homes being complete later in the summer.

"We anticipate a development like this will provide many community benefits including around 200 jobs throughout the duration of the project."

Barratt said it has been consulting with the local community on the plans, with public exhibitions held in June and newsletters sent out to around 500 people living near the proposed site.

Shropshire Council is aiming to build 6,500 new houses in Shrewsbury between 2006 and 2026.

While about 2,500 have been built or given planning permission between April 2006 and March 2013, 4,000 new properties are still required to meet the housing target.

Earlier this year, Shropshire Council released a draft masterplan for a major new development on land off Welshpool Road in Bicton Heath.

That scheme includes plans for 750 homes as well as the creation of a major new link road between the A5 bypass and the Holyhead Road.

In a statement in support of the Barratt Homes plans, Nicol Thomas Architects, says the homes will consist of a mix of 16 different house types interspersed in the development. They are varied in size, height, built form, tenure, monetary value and appearance.

The statement adds: "Care has been taken to ensure that the affordable houses are indistinguishable from the privately-sold dwellings in their appearance and positions in the development."

"Affordable dwellings have been given equal standing in the layout, all having good sized gardens and dedicated parking spaces."

The application has only just gone in, but has already attracted one objection from a local resident over traffic concerns.
