New homes on historic site will bring investment to Shrewsbury

Work is set to begin on the transformation of the former home of King's Shropshire Light Infantry which, the developers say, will bring £1 million to Shrewsbury.

Bellway Homes bought Copthorne Army Barracks from the Ministry of Defence in 2017 and applied to Shropshire Council for permission to demolish a number of buildings and build more than 200 new homes in the grounds.

The historic Keep will be transformed in to luxury apartments.

The house builders say the new development which will generate investment worth more than £1 million in the local area.

Bellway’s plans for 216 new homes off Copthorne Road were approved by Shropshire Council last month, paving the way for the start of construction on site.

The development, which will be known as Copthorne Keep, will comprise one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, including 43 properties designated as affordable housing. The first plots are set to be released for sale in May.

As part of the planning agreement for the development, Bellway is contributing over £1 million towards education, £110,000 for highways, £115,000 for a new sports pitch and more than £30,000 towards open space.
