A level crossing through a village caused a hold-up when the barriers became stuck and blocked traffic.

Motorists were forced to wait at Oswestry Road in Whittington, after the barriers separating the road from the railway failed to raise again once a train passed at 12.20pm today.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We apologise to motorists affected by the fault at Whittington level crossing today. The fault, which prevented the half barrier from raising, was resolved within 15 minutes and no trains were affected.

"Traffic is now able to pass as normal over the crossing.

“Teams will carry out examinations of the level crossing this evening, once trains have stopped running, to prevent this from happening again.”

Whittington is near Gobowen, and the railway line through the village connects Shrewsbury with Wrexham and Liverpool.
