A webcam viewer helped to save the life of an elderly man after spotting him floating in a river.

According to the Hamburg Fire Brigade, police received a call in the early hours of Thursday morning from a man saying he had spotted a person in the River Elbe via a webcam.

Boats and divers were deployed by the fire brigade, who quickly found an elderly man floating in the water.

The 72-year-old, who was suffering from suspected hypothermia by the time fire crews reached him, was too weak to hold on to the flotation aid they threw for him but he was eventually pulled from the water.

Paramedics then treated him and took him to a local hospital.

It is not yet known how the man ended up in the water in the first place.
