Letter: Potholes need to be repaired properly

I have just seen two signs informing of forthcoming 'surface dressing' work on the A449 near Cookley and the B4176 near Swindon.

We all know what this means, the misery of loose grit thrown down over a thin layer of tar that does not address the uneven surface or potholes and wears out after a few months into bare patches or big problems in the heat.

Many potholes, as the authorities keep telling us, have been filled in, but these have been crudely patched in most cases only to be in the same situation in a couple of months or sooner.

One such pothole in Abberley Road near Bewdley swallowed my car one night in late November. There were no warnings of it and the next day I took photos. I noticed it had been marked in red for repair. I put in a claim for a blown tyre, a badly bent alloy wheel and a suspension arm which cost me in the region of £200.

They refused my claim because they say they did everything they should do to address the situation (apart from repairing the pothole). This pothole is opening up again now, which means they will have to send a team out to repair it again. Some repairs further along this road only lasted a few weeks and are as bad again now.

Why oh why don't the authorities relay the road properly, something like you would get in an affluent area or in Wales where they seem to have more money to spend on doing things properly. Surely this patch and run approach is ultimately costing us more money.
