Shropshire Star

We must preserve our great heritage

An open letter to Councillor Moseley regarding the historic cellar under the corner of Murivance and St John’s Hill, Shrewsbury.

Published
Alan Fox is calling on Shropshire Council to reverse its decision to fill the cellar, which lies adjacent to his home.

I have been following the issues involved in the discovery and proposed treatment of this archaeological treasure. It is undoubtedly part of our town’s rich heritage.

As such it belongs both to the history of our town and further to the history of our country.

As such I feel blinkered short-term solutions of concrete infill are totally inappropriate, merely to save money. The cellar has been there for many centuries without endangering the highway.

I feel it is incumbent on our generation not only to preserve this hidden artefact but to also provide a solution where the cellar may be viewed by a glazed walkway/ highway of some sort. This is not a cheap option but respects our great heritage.

Please do not be part of what has happened to our town pre the arrival of its saviour Andrew Arrol in the late 1960s and 1970s.
