Bushell, from Telford, who topped the podium at the London Games in 2012 and also won silver in Beijing in 2008, gave an inspirational speech before taking part in a Q&A session and then handing out the various awards.

The main award winners were Abbie Cottam, Lucy Elcock, Lucie Poulter, Lilly Goulden, Grace Haigh, Lucia Rooney, Shana Stewardson, Daisy Stanyon, Archie Wickens, Dan Wood, Henry Gibbons, Jacob McLoughlin, Tom George, Max Cattle and Charlie Carvell.

Carvell’s award capped an impressive year for the youngster who has also recently landed the Dereck Hayward Trophy for being the most successful Shropshire athlete at the English Schools Pentathlon Championships.

And there was still time for the club to celebrate more success before the year end.

The final fixture of the Shropshire Cross League took place at Much Wenlock were Bridgnorth were aiming to retain their boys’ and overall club titles plus several age group titles that they won last year.

Over 250 athletes competed from 15 clubs, but nobody could stop Bridgnorth being crowned boys’ and overall club champions for the second successive year and also winning the boys’ under-11 and under-15 title and also the girls under-17 category.

Dan Galloway took the individual plaudits in the day with gold at under-15 level. Archie Wickens took silver in the same age group, with Dan Wood and Jack Cole bagging bronze medals at under-11 and under-17 respectively.
