Sam Hain ended unbeaten on 92 as featured in a last-wicket stand of 49 with Oliver Hannon-Dalby (13) before the visitors were bowled out for 189 in their second innings, Lewis Gregory claiming four for 48.

Somerset took 20 points from their third Championship victory in four games, while their opponents had to settle for three and remain anchored at the foot of the First Division table.

Warwickshire coach Jim Troughton said: “One of the differences between the teams was that Somerset’s bowlers gave us very little between taking wickets, while we conceded too many extras in the first innings.

“I was disappointed with that and the fact that we only scored 135 in our first innings when 180 would have kept us well in the game. But there were positives for us in the bowling of Liam Norwell, after such a long time out injured, and the batting of Sam Hain, which showed real quality on a difficult surface.

“Those are things we can take out of the match going forward, plus the fact that we went toe-to-toe with probably the in-form team in the country.”
