Comment: Signings have been statement of intent for AFC Telford

What a difference a year can make in football. In January 2017, AFC Telford were heading into a relegation scrap.

Twelve months on and the Bucks are going into a promotion battle, something no fan could have scarcely imagined last year.

The ease at which Telford kept fellow promotion-chasers Spennymoor at bay last Saturday just underlined what they are about this season – and how strong they are.

They are fourth and we are well over halfway through the season, so Gavin Cowan’s men are well past their early-season flurry.

And after the week they had last week, bringing in two eye-catching signings, they are arguably in a handier position than any of the sides above them.

One note is that of the three sides above them, only Bradford Park Avenue have beaten them this season, and that was a narrow and tight victory for the Yorkshiremen.

It is also telling that when you look at the fixture list, it isn’t ‘we can nick a point there’ or ‘we would take a point there’. It is we can go there and we can win.

No one wants to get ahead of themselves as Cowan has eluded to on many occasions, but it is hard for a Telford fan not to.

This is the best position the club has been in, on and off the green stuff, for four years now.

One note that was touched on after the game last weekend was the intent that the Bucks board has shown by bringing in Marcus Dinanga and Brendon Daniels.

The board has to be singled out for praise on this. Now that Telford are in a position to go for it, they are going for it.

The signings are both head turners, and whether it is interim chairman Andy Pryce or football operations manager Luke Shelley, they have to be commended for backing the boss.

Whether it works remains to be seen, but a positive side note from it is Cowan insisting the Bucks aren’t breaking the bank and are not flush with money.

The club are certainly going in the right direction both on and off the pitch, and the fans will be hoping long may it continue.
