AFC Telford expecting to keep hold of top stars

AFC Telford United boss Gavin Cowan is confident none of his stars will exit any time soon, as they bid to record their fifth league win in a row tomorrow.

The Bucks have risen to fourth in National League North and caught the eye, but Cowan insists the club is in a position to hold on to their key players if bigger clubs come calling.

Ahead of hosting managerless Harriers, he said: “Someone might come in for one of our players, we can’t stop that.

“But at this moment in time we have no need to get rid of anyone.

“We want to keep the group together as they’re doing well.

“We’ve managed to balance the books – we’re not over the budget or anything like that – as we have got a few out as well as bringing a few in.

“We’re in no rush to get anyone out. We don’t need to.”

While Telford are going into tomorrow’s New Bucks Head clash on a crest of a wave, Harriers are in the midst of a difficult period.

They are managerless and have lost their last three games in the league, dropping out of the play-off places, but Cowan still considers them one of the strongest teams in the division.

“It’ll be extremely tough, they’ve been one of the better teams in this league for number of years,” he said.

“I wouldn’t read too much into how they’ve done as things can change quickly in football, but we’ve got everyone ready to go so we’re looking forward to it.”

And Cowan hopes there will be a big crowd on hand for the encounter.

“He’d be shocked if we didn’t get a very good crowd,” he added.

“If there’s ever a time to come out and show your support, it’s now.

“Telford fans have had it tough over the past few years, but we’re doing well now and I’m expecting the community to come out and back the team as we’re on an upward spin.”

Meanwhile, Telford have recalled teenage striker Jack Downing from his loan at Midland Premier side Stourport Swifts.

He scored 11 goals in 23 appearances, and the Bucks said in a statement: “AFC Telford United can confirm we have recalled Jack Downing from his loan spell with Stourport Swifts.

“We would like to thank everyone at Stourport Swifts for the role they have played in Jack’s development.”
