Market Drayton Town face rivals while on goal trail

Market Drayton Town meet old foes Chasetown in their penultimate home league game of a see-saw season on a high Saturday, having scored 11 goals in their last three outings.

Scores of 3-0 at home to Clitheroe, 7-0 away to Newport Town and 1-1 at Skelmersdale last Saturday add up to a feeling of relief at Greenfields.

Especially as this happy spell also brought an end to lingering worries about Northern One West relegation and a place in the Huddersfield Cup final. That’s a turnaround to give any under-pressure team a lift – and Town manager Martyn Davies readily admits it’s made him a lot happier going into what’s always been a tough derby duel.

“Chasetown are going well at the moment so this little run’s come just right for us,” he said. “OK, the opposition’s not been in Chasetown’s class but three games unbeaten with 11 goals and only one against has got to be a confidence booster. It’s a shame we could not get over that line at Skelmersdale too but we had a great first half there and with any sort of luck would have been four or five up at half time, rather than just one.

“The seven we scored against Newport Town in the Huddersfield Cup semi-final at Eccleshall the previous Thursday had obviously done us good.”
