Bernard McNally: I’d love to see Dave Edwards back at Shrewsbury Town

The Welshman is out of contract at Reading in the summer and this week said a Meadow move is ‘definitely something’ that interests him.

And it would be tremendous if Town could pull it off, either in January on loan until the end of the season, or on a permanent deal, as he’s such a decorated player – Championship and League One titles on his CV, as well as a Euro 2016 semi-final run with Wales.

If you are looking for a boost in the transfer window, you’ll do well to find another player of Dave’s quality.

Signing him would really boost the enthusiasm of fans. I think it would be a huge positive for the club.

Sam Ricketts played alongside him at Wolves, and for Wales, so knows him much better than we do. He knows his personality, what he could bring to Salop both on and off the pitch.

And I think that could be a very, very good move for Town.

Recruitment is absolutely vital, especially in your first transfer window which Sam has coming up – great players make great coaches.

Dave has had a fantastic career and I reckon he still has plenty to offer.

He may be 32 now and he has not played this campaign for the Royals because of an injury picked up in pre-season, but one of his strengths has always been his physical shape. Dave keeps himself in excellent condition, so I think he’s got at least a couple of years left in the tank.

Town are playing a 4-4-2 diamond at the moment as well and he seems set up for that system – playing at the tip of the midfield and bursting into the box.

It would be great to see Town make that signing. It would be very exciting.

But, for now, the focus is on Saturday’s League One game against Coventry.

Last weekend’s result, the 2-2 draw with Peterborough, was a bit disappointing.

Town got their noses in front and you just thought they would see it out in the final few minutes. But, hopefully, they can make up for that and get three points on the board this week, sealing Sam’s first League One win in charge of Town.

Apparently, training has taken a step up – you have to train in the same way that you play in a game – so I think it is only a matter of time until results start to pick up.

It is unlikely Shaun Whalley will feature after he limped off with a hamstring injury against the Posh.

Hopefully, it is not the usual six-week spell on the sidelines – fingers crossed it is just a week or two as he’s one of Salop’s most important, influential players.
