Sam Ricketts felt his Shrewsbury Town side lacked confidence in 'fragile performance'

Disappointed Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts felt a lack of confidence against Charlton displayed the 'fragile nature' of his team.

Town were close to capitulating in the second half against the high-flying Addicks as they conceded a second and third goal with no response on an afternoon to forget.

Lyle Taylor netted in a fairly even first half after Luke Waterfall almost put in his own net. Darren Pratley and Karlan Grant's penalty completed the comfortable victory.

If it were not for goalkeeper Steve Arnold, who made three solid saves, and some poor finishing from Charlton, the scoreline could've been much heavier.

Ricketts said: "The start of the second half wasn't great, we gave them a few chances, we tried to continue like we were in the first half, where we finished strongly.

"We wanted to start the second half like that, a few chances went against us and we lost our way a little bit.

"You saw players lose their way and lose confidence, if I'm honest I think they lost belief in themselves.

"I think that's just the fragile nature of the team really, they shouldn't lose confidence as quick as that.

"If they go a goal or two down, as soon as you get one you're back in the game, we were denied another penalty today.

"Just like the other week, I think it's handle as soon as you raise your arms."

Ricketts was pleased enough with his side's first half display, where they created a gilt-edged chance through Josh Laurent but were often caught on the break by Charlton's pacy attack.

But he added that the defeat, a first in 10 home games, was the most disappointed he has been since his appointment at Montgomery Waters Meadow

He continued: "First half I thought we were good. I was really disappointed coming in behind in the first half because I thought we had better chances.

"We had a great chance to get ahead, didn't take it then conceded off a set-piece which is always disappointing.

"As much as I wasn't happy at half-time, you could see an effort in the performance.

"But I've just said to the players the second-half is as disappointed as I've been since I've been here."
