The Welshman, who signed on Monday on a free transfer from Reading, made his second Shrews bow 13 minutes from time with Town 2-0 down in the 3-0 home reverse against Charlton.

Edwards, 32, was given a rousing reception from the Shrewsbury fans as he came on 12 years after leaving for Luton. He saw a half-chance from a tight angle blocked as the game neared its conclusion with Town soundly beaten.

The groin injury, which boss Sam Ricketts said made a bad day worse, came while he was attempting to squeeze that effort in from a tight angle.

The Town medical team will asses the injury over the next couple of days, Edwards is ineligible to feature against Stoke in Tuesday's FA Cup replay at Stoke.

"It wasn't ideal. We'd all love Dave to be able to start the game but we have to work with where he's at physically," said Town boss Ricketts, who oversaw Shrews' heaviest home defeat since October 2016.

"We have to gradually ease him up as much as we can, we can't just throw him in and expect him to play full matches.

"We have to ease him in as quick as we can but he can't rush.

"He just nicked his groin a little bit, hopefully it's not too bad. We'll assess over the next couple of days.

"It's things like that when you see a bad day get worse."
