Shrewsbury Town boss Sam Ricketts: That was for the fans

Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts hailed his side's miraculous 3-2 turnaround victory at Stoke as 'for the supporters' as Town's heroics set up a fourth round tie with Wolves.

Two goals down with 20 minutes to go after a poor first half display at the Bet365 Stadium, Ricketts' men staged a remarkable fight back - and it was a just reward for their second half improvement.

Ricketts said the 1,600 vocal Town away fans pushed his side on to turn things around in the Potteries, with goals from James Bolton, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Josh Laurent coming in front of a euphoric away end.

"The win is for the supporters. In the first half we were playing at 60 or 70 per cent. I was frustrated watching it and they would've been," said Ricketts, who added that the outcome was one of the best results of his young managerial career.

"They wanted to come here to see a good game. Their supporter never wavered. I could hear them all game, their support was fantastic.

"That's when I say how important they are. They stayed with the team, backed the team and because of that we gave a second half importance.

"Their support is vital if we're to be successful. If things aren't going well we need them to stay behind us. Then we can give something back."

Ricketts sent on Omar Beckles for Aaron Amadi-Holloway and changed system at the break and thereafter were much the better side.

The manager added: "I said to the players if you're going to take anything out of it take belief. You're a good team when you play with intensity and aggression.

"You will give everyone a good game. When we play half, three quarters or 90 per cent it isn't enough. We have to be flat out to win games."

Salop's reward for their magnificent victory is the visit of Wolves at the beginning of next month, manager Ricketts' former club and that of Dave Edwards.

"It's a local derby, a great derby, I'm sure it'll be a sell out, something to look forward to," he added.

"When the time comes I'm sure we will look forward to it. I don't want to be a humbug but I said make sure you recover now because we've got a big game Saturday."
