Goalscorer Alex Rodman says the ‘perfect scenario’ would be Shrewsbury and his Bristol Rovers side avoiding the League One drop this season.

Former Town winger Rodman ended his old club’s hopes of a second away league win this season with a second-half equaliser at the Memorial Stadium in a bad-tempered clash on Saturday which saw Dave Edwards sent off late on.

Rodman, signed by Paul Hurst, spent 18 months at Shrewsbury and scored in the League One play-off final to bring Town level at Wembley last May.

But he was allowed a free header to bring Rovers level for his fifth goal of this season. Rodman admitted to ‘mixed emotions’ and wants his former side to climb away from trouble.

“I’d definitely like to see them both out of trouble. I’ve got a lot of mates there,” said the Birmingham-based wideman.

“If I could pick some other teams to be in the relegation zone apart from us and Shrewsbury that would be the perfect scenario.

“I have very fond memories of Shrewsbury. I’ll always have a lot of time for the boys there and the fans.

“A little bit of mixed emotions scoring against them. We had such a great year last year, but we’re in a relegation battle.

“As those boys would say, points are vital and goals are vital, I would’ve loved us to take the three points but it’s a bit of mixed emotions.”

Rodman’s former team-mate Shaun Whalley had given Salop a first-half lead in a crunch clash at the bottom of League One with just a point separating the sides.

“He mentioned afterwards it was probably written for me and him to score,” Rodman added. “It’s a shame Shaun’s been injured.

Lads like Sads (Mat Sadler), Omar (Beckles), Bolts (James Bolton) and Shaun (Whalley), you’re talking to them through the game and it’s weird because we went through so much last year

.”
