Shrewsbury Town taking safety one game at a time – Shaun Whalley

Shaun Whalley insists Shrewsbury Town would ‘love’ the comfort of being in mid-table but are focusing on their survival battle one match at a time.

The Town flyer, who has played at right wing-back in recent matches for Sam Ricketts’ team, is aware of how close Salop find themselves to the sides in the middle of the pack.

But the 31-year-old, who made his 150th Town appearance last week, knows his team-mates can’t afford to look too far ahead.

“I was looking at the table after we beat Doncaster and there was only a couple of points in it all the way to mid-table really,” said Whalley.

“We’d love to be in that position, but we’ve just got to focus on winning games and I’m sure we’ll be perfectly fine.”

“I think so,” said Whalley when asked if the first target was League One safety.

“But I don’t look too far ahead, it’s just the Rochdale game on my mind now. A good week of training and then a tough match against Rochdale. I’m looking forward to that one.”

Whalley has been back in Ricketts’ team since they began their unbeaten run five matches ago at Bristol Rovers, where he scored.

“I know it’s different going away – but (against Wimbledon) I thought we controlled most of the game,” he added.

“But I think we’re passing the ball a lot better, there’s obviously times when we can pass it even better but I’m sure that’ll come.”
