Sam Ricketts: It could take up to three transfer windows at Shrewsbury Town

The Town chief says, on average, managers require a few dips into the market to turn around an entire club and face it in the right direction.

Ricketts pointed to elite examples of the rule, notably Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, with the German enjoying success in his third full season on Merseyside.

The Welshman believes three windows, which would take him to January 2020, is enough to time to ensure that a squad is 100 per cent that of the current incumbent.

“I think it does take that long. It takes time to recruit who you want to – they’re not always available in one window,” said Town boss Ricketts.

“It’s different scales but Jurgen Klopp had three years at Liverpool to get to where he wants to.

“The team that played against Barcelona represent him. You can see that clearly.

“There’s no-one there who he doesn’t want there. He’s either signed them or kept them there. There’s a reason why they’re there.

“It takes time, but not all managers get that time unfortunately.

“You have to be very clear in your process of what you’re trying to do and you have to get as close to it as quick as you can because you need results.

“The results will build confidence but it can take time even though we’re trying to do everything as quick as we can.”

Ricketts is wary of another ‘big turnaround’ at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

He made big changes in January to the squad he adopted from John Askey.

Askey, when appointed last summer, also made wholesale changes after Town’s successful squad under Paul Hurst was decimated following the Yorkshireman’s departure.

“You might be able to do it quicker (than three transfer windows). But the more windows you have the more it is yours, because ultimately you’ve either signed or retained everyone,” Ricketts added.

“It does become yours. You try to get there as quick as you can.

“There was a big turnaround in January with 13 out and nine or 10 in. That’s a big turnaround.

“You don’t want too many big turnarounds because you want the consistent element of the club as well.

“It’s always a fine line when you’re getting where you want to be.”
