Scott Sturdy’s Whitchurch squad depth will be tested

Coach Scott Sturdy admits the depth of Whitchurch’s squad will be tested as they look to keep their promotion hopes alive at Worcester.

The Edgeley Road men are right in the mix near the top of Midlands One West but head into tomorrow’s game missing a number of key men.

Matt Owen, Jake Rees and Joe Mullock are among several players unavailable for a clash between two of the divisions most in-form teams.

Both have won their last four games and Sturdy, whose side won 43-12 at Sutton Coldfield last weekend, said: “It’s going to be a big test of our strength in depth.

“It’s not ideal but every team, every week has players missing and there can be no excuses.

“I’m confident the players we have are good enough to go and get a result.”

Whitchurch sit fourth in the table but just one point behind second-placed Dudley Kingswinford, who occupy the play-off spot, and third-placed Newbold.

It means the dream of a second straight promotion is very much alive and Sturdy said: “Whatever happens now we have had a successful season. No-one expected us to be in this position.

“At the moment DK are in the box seat and if they win their last three games, taking bonus points, there is nothing we can do. But we won’t stop fighting.”
